Tutorial Roundup: Spring Skirts

Last week's tutorial roundup was all about winter lingering. Let us turn our thoughts to warmer weather and spring skirts, shall we? Maybe if we collectively sew for spring - for you or a little one in your life - it will get here sooner? We can only hope...

  1. This comment is about knitting... I am not a knitter, but I am looking to buy my mother a thank you present and believe that a knitting project would be a fun hobby for her. She likes to quilt and has crocheted in the past so knitting might be new and exciting. Can you recommend a good book/pattern/needle/yarn to start with? I would so much appreciate it. Congratulations on your pregnancy! My baby girl was born just 4 weeks ago and my son is 3 1/2 - wish I knew how to knit something for them, like you do Olivia, but I'll stick to sewing for now -not much time for anything else. Thank you for your help! Smiles, Sarah A.

  2. Hi Sarah! What a fun question - and thoughtful gift for your mom. I recommend you check out Yarn.com. It's a family-run store out of Mass. (They also have a podcast called Ready, Set, Knit.) Malabrigo Worsted or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran are great yarns. Needles are tough because they're such a personal choice - like a sewing machine. But, Clover bamboo is a good place to start. She'll need US Size 8 Straight needles for the yarns I recommended. Patterns - start her on a scarf to begin with. You shouldn't have to purchase a basic scarf pattern - just Google "basic knit scarf" or something like that.

Good luck with the knitting gift! And best wishes with your little ones - sounds like we have a lot in common. :-)

  3. Dear Sarah, Thank you for your helpful information. I am going to get her (my mom) some of your suggestions. Plus, I enrolled her in a knitting class for beginners at her local yarn shop. I think she might get into it! Then she can teach me! Just want you to know you are an inspiration! I love your creative projects that you complete, your blog, podcast and etsy shop (where I just made my first purchase last week. Love the bird pattern that I got to make a mobile for my little Birdie Rae.). Plus, that you are a working & family mommy - wow! Smiles, Sarah A.
